Call for Contributors: Visual

Eligibility Criteria and Notes on Application

Please note that these guidelines may change and grow with Audio/Visible between calls for contributors. You should check these guidelines before applying to contribute to each issue, to ensure that you are up to date on eligibility and contributor expectations.

  1. All visual art contributors featured in Audio/Visible must be permanent residents of Toronto, or the Greater Toronto Area. In the case of groups or collectives where some members reside outside of this geographical area, we require that at least 50% of the members reside within our GTA catchment.

  2. In each issue Audio/Visible will feature at least 80% artists who are not cis, white males. In the case of groups or collectives from multiple backgrounds, we require that either 50% of members, or the creative voice of the group, not identify as cis, white men.

  3. Applications for contribution will be accepted from a wide range of visual art styles and mediums. This may include, but is not limited to: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, ceramics, collage, mixed media, and digital art. Please note that the piece must be suitable for display as a static image in the publication. If the piece requires specialty equipment for exhibition, then the visual artist must provide this equipment for the launch event. Alternatively, a large-format version of the image from the publication will be used in the exhibition.

  4. Audio/Visible is committed to featuring new and emerging artists. For our purposes, this is defined as an artist who has not yet realized substantial regional or national exposure. These artists have a small body of work and have had limited public exhibition experience.

NOTE: Our team recognizes that not all personal and marginalized identities are visible or obvious. At the application stage of contribution we offer the opportunity for all potential contributors to self-identify, and indicate the impact of that identity on their art. Self-identification is not a requirement for contribution; we provide this option simply as a method to help us better meet our mandate to provide at least 80% of creative space to marginalized voices.
