Audio/Visible was an online zine produced to address and encourage the interaction between audio and visual arts. There was no creative theme, aside from the overarching interest in inter-art exploration.
We featured five pairs of creatives, with each pair comprised of one musician/sound artist and one visual artist. Musicians submitted a completed and released recording and the corresponding visual artist had one month to create a visual response.
The zine itself features static visual reproductions of the newly created visual art; artist statements from the visual artists about their newly created pieces; a feature interview on the audio artist; photos of the paired visual and audio artists; and a link to the stream of the musician’s recording.
Vision:
Audio/Visible investigates the interaction between audio and visual arts produced by emerging creatives in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area through the creation of new works.
Mission:
Through one-time publication, Audio/Visible builds a positive community of like-minded creatives. The unconventional and potentially collaborative approach to creation used encourages expanded practice and increased creative networks.
Mandate:
Audio/Visible paired five visual artists with five musicians/musical groups. Visual artists are given an existing recording, and each creates a visual work in response. Resulting publications feature reproduction of the new art; streams of the inspiration tracks; and features on all participating artists and musicians. We attempted to create a publication that is as diverse as the people who work within Toronto’s vibrant creative communities. Roughly 20% of Toronto’s population identifies as cis white men, and in an effort to achieve more proportional representation of the city’s creatives, a maximum of 20% of contributors in each issue will be representative of that demographic.
