Submissions FAQ
Q: I am not from Toronto, can I still apply?
A: As it stands, our mission is to support creatives in our immediate community. That might change as we grow, but for right now we are only considering artists and musicians from Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.
Q: I do not have my music online, can I still apply?
A: The easiest way for us to get your music out there is by adding it to a Spotify playlist - that way you collect the royalties every time someone is redirected from our zine to your music. However, if Spotify doesn’t make sense for you and your career, we can help set you up with another website (Bandcamp, for example) where readers can stream your music, and where you can set your tracks or album(s) up for sale.
Q: Why are you only featuring 20% cis, white male contributors?
A: Toronto is the most diverse city in the world. Despite this, we at Audio/Visible believe that this is not properly represented in the arts industry. We aim to combat this by ensuring our platform provides the opportunity for a multitude of voices to be showcased. Our focus is not to limit the voices of cis, white males, but rather to ensure their voices are included as a part of Toronto's cornucopia of diverse voices.
Q: I’m a cis, white male. Should I bother applying?
A: Yes! While Audio/Visible is committed to providing a platform for underrepresented groups, we want to include talent from everyone!
Q: Are artists being compensated?
A: Yes.
Q: I am a visual artist and my partner is a musician. Can we submit together?
A: Submissions must be made on an individual basis. We are interested in pairing together visual artists and musicians who do not know each other and are not familiar with each others' work. In future issues we may seek contributions from pairs of artists, so check back!
Q: I'm a visual artist, how exactly will this work if I am chosen?
A: We will send you one track and you will create a response to it (in your chosen medium). You will have approximately one month to complete your work. The work created must be able to be reproduced as a still image in the online zine and then exhibited at the launch event.
Q: Does it cost money to submit?
A: No.
Q: Do you need to be a recognized artist/musician with an extensive track record of exhibition/press.
A: No! We welcome emerging artists just starting out and struggling to have their voices heard. Audio/Visible aims to encourage the development of new art and improve the culture surrounding the arts in the city of Toronto.
